The adventure which has come to be known as “Third Contact the Movie” started for me in 2009, when I set out to write a screenplay for a feature film I could shoot myself, without funding.

With the ‘cinema on demand’ campaign for a 20 city tour of the USA & Canada falling some way short of its goal, it’s time for this journey to end.

As it became increasingly unlikely we were going to make that target in the last week of the campaign, a part of me was very much looking forward to finding myself at the end of this road (with a sandy beach, a bar and a cold beer. OK, I didn’t get to the sandy beach, yet).

Of course, I did everything I could to reach that goal, but it was with a mixture of disappointment and relief that I watched the IndieGoGo clock tick to 0, symbolically bringing an end to the whole project.

The first campaign was an exhausting but ultimately exhilarating experience, and we made a bit of history with the ‘global premiere’ at the BFI IMAX. Standing in the auditorium looking at the 300 or so excited people waiting for the film to start, I thought to myself, “whatever happens from now, no-one can take this away from me”.

If you work hard and achieve something, no matter how small, award yourself that moment. In the creative industries, especially, these moments are few and far between. So make sure to engrave your name on the statuette in your mind (if there isn’t a real one on offer), and keep it close, as you set off to defy the odds once more.

For me, it’s now time to move on to new ideas, new stories, new films, new adventures.

Thanks again to everyone who helped not only make this film possible, but who also supported its journey all the way to some great cinema screens around world. For me it’s been a wonderful, life-changing experience. I hope you got something from the ride too.
